MYE 2013 EXAM PREP... updated!

1. Review your Elements and Principles of Art.  Read through the posts above and make sure you understand how to talk about all the Elements and Principles and what their use can mean.
2. Read through the HISTORY OF ART.  Try to be clear on the various art concepts: Realism, Surrealism, Abstract, Impressionism, Expressionism, etc and a few examples of artists that do each.
3. Read through the posts above.  Make sure you understand the Themes: Portraits, Culture/Society, Ideas and Imagination.   
4.  Look at the following pictures and be familiar with them.  I have posted 13 pictures.  8 of these pictures will be on the exam.

Assignment #4 MYE 2013 PRACTICE TWO


Answer three questions:  One from Section A, one from Section B and one additional question from either section.

REMEMBER:  EACH QUESTION NEEDS 10 GOOD POINTS

Section A: Structured SINGLE WORK Questions
Answer all of the parts (a-c) of each question you choose.

1.  Buffaloes from the Field to the Town by Montien Boonma  1998 Installation of unhusked rice, sacks, straw, horn, stools.  Life size.  [Figure 1]
a) Describe the theme of this installation.
b) Discuss how the artist has used the materials.
c) Do you think this installation can carry a message to the public more effectively than other art forms?

2. Spy Lens by Lucia Hartini  1989 Oil on Canvas 145x145cm [Figure 2]
a) Describe the composition of this painting.
b) Comment on the artist's use of colour and tone.
c) How does this work show influence from both Surrealism and Realism?


Section B: Structured COMPARISON Questions
Answer all of the parts (a-c) of each question you choose.

3. Indian Women by Liu Kang 1965  Oil on Canvas 119x85cm [Figure 3a]
    AND

a) Compare the composition and subject matter of these paintings.

c) What does each work suggest about relationships between the people who are depicted?

4. The Thinker by Auguste Rodin 1880 Cast Bronze 180x108x141cm [Figure 4a]
     AND
     Meditating by Ng Eng Teng 1989 Cast Bronze [Figure 4b]
a) Compare the treatment of the human form in both of these sculptures.
b) Discuss the artist's choice and use of materials.
c) In your opinion, which of these two sculptures is the most effective?  Give reasons for your choice.
